From July, 25th, to Aug 01 the 7th edition of our summer school Laboratory of Places took place. This year we changed location, and we went to Sacro Monte di Domodossola, which is included in UNESCO World Heritage list. The place was amazing, and we aimed to survey some chapels and produce 3D models, drawings and material and decay analyses.
We selected twenty students, coming from Italy, Europe, South America, and India. They learned the operational issues related to measurement techniques with TLS (terrestrial laser scanner), the processing of the acquired data, and more. In fact, besides our team, we also invited national and international tutors, enriching our competencies and skills and giving the students a 360° training experience on Cultural Heritage field. In particular, Geert J. Verhoeven from Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft – GmbH, Austria, challenged the students in a lecture about the photography technique and then organised a photo contest during the summer school. Luca e Marco Rosa Clot of Geostudio RC showed how to use the drone for photogrammetry survey, helping to complete and integrate the laser scanner data. Maurizio Cesprini of Canova Association organised a journey into the Ossola architecture, demonstrating the importance of knowing the territory and its traditions. Sonja Pistidda of Politecnico di Milano taught how to make a correct material and decay analysis. Richard Laing from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, made a fascinating lecture on digital heritage application and social engagement in Scotland and also wrote an excellent article on us here. Simone Oppici and Marco Formentini of Leica Geosystems team showed the latest tools for 3D survey and scanning: the Pegasus Mobile Backpack, and the new RTC360 scanner.
